The Emily Project (Siggraph 2008)

Back in 2008 Image Metrics used a clip of Emily to showcase the power of the company’s FaceWare software at Siggraph this showed as you can see below how Digital Domain an academy award winning digital production studio the software was up to the job of creating effects for the film “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. Now this I do find really interesting as it could protectional cut down the cost of making films that require 3D tracking software and tech I may just have to look into trying it out myself.

Self-Image Project (The Change of Plan and Why)

My self-image project as not been a easy one for one trying to think of a creative idea that expresses yourself what you like and even what you dislike. now my originally idea was to create a interactive white board and allow my peers to interact with images of myself and things i liked such as books and films ect..

The idea behind this project was to show the my peers how I love interactive media and also show them what i liked in a every different way.
I did this using a computer, a projector, a Wiimote and software that was free to use from Johnny Chung Lee’s website.

This was very simple to do and it all worked the the problem was allowing people to interact with images and alter them this is where i hit a brick wall as they say so i decided not to give up on the idea but to come back to it and keep coming back to it till i have mange to complete this project.

But… I still had to hand something in so i decided to do a 2D pixel animation based upon retro computer games like Pac-Man so i got to work and brought some graph paper and drew a few character designs and ideas for the environment in which the character would move and interact with.
Once I had done this I got to work animating my designs I did this using Adobe Flash CS5 by first switching on the show grid and snap to grid applications this would make it much easier to draw out and set out drawing my designs out starting out with my very simple design based upon Pac-Man.

Once I had drawn out my design I began to animate my character moving it slightly frame by frame this took a while and now with four done I decided to place these into Adobe Première Pro CS5 and see what they would like once all put together with a soundtrack taken from Pac-Man.

Let me know what you think.

Level 1: – Media,
Because I love the media industry and is something I highly enjoy and would like it to be my future place of work.

Level 2: – Books,
Because I do on a evening like to read books some of my favourites are “Yes Man”, “Friends Like These” by Danny Wallace and “World War Z” by Max Brooks.

Level 3: – Going Out (Illustrated with Image of Drinks)
Because I like going out with my friends socialising and meeting new people.

Level 4: – Jokes
Again because I like to hang out with my friends and have a laugh with them and just relax with them and talk.

Now my only problem was it only lasts 31 seconds and I think it needs to last longer so my next plan is again another 2D pixel animation but this time Influenced by the old Super Mario games I have my character designed all I need to do I to figure out how to animate the character and make it look like he is walking in Adobe Flash CS5.

So my next plan was to again do another 2D pixel animation but this time Influenced by the old Super Mario games have designed characters and coins now all had to do was animate them decided do in as you can see it success as you can see at the very bottom of this post.
I did this time using Adobe Photoshop CS5 i first drew out the images in individual layers i also copied a few such as the coins and my character so i had one facing to the left and one to the right i then began to animate frame by frame the reason behind animating it frame by frame was so I could have slightly more control and could ensure my animation was smooth.

Once I had done this I then exported it out at as a Quicktime Movie and began building the end product in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 fitting all the pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle and adding various elements such as Music, Sound FX, Bars and Tones to add something to the beginning, and titles speaking of which i haven’t come up with a title for the end product any suggestion?

processing i find really difficult to get my head round it’s the language in which you have to input data that i find difficult but with practise i am slowly getting the hand of it what i find makes it allot easier to use is some small graph paper and draw it out by hand to start with and then making notes about what information i think i need to enter to make it work in processing. Below are few images created using the tutorials on the processing website, time to create some of my own i think i will let you know how it goes.

Rant’s about Interactive Installation pieces.

Have you ever wanted to capture single words that you feel define you as a person in a certain point in your life or even a certain image of a place/country I purpose a installation piece that allows you to do just that. Using your own body to capture thos words and perhaps place/attach them to that person while they are in that room weather this is possible is a different story. I got this idea from a video on I saw on YouTube.

Interactive Projection

This is so cool and very well done I can not wait till I work on something like this or even produce something like this.

My self-portrait project

My self-portrait project is now finally taking shape I set up the projector and wiimote to my computer and synced the wiimote up to the computer using a piece of software called “Whiteboard” I found looking though Johnny Lee Chung’s own website and bought two inferred LED’s and two small watch batteries I then stuck them together and calibrated the wiimote to pick up the inferred LED’s which was successful and opened up Photoshop CS5 and began to paint on the wall using the inferred LED’s. The only problem I had was the calibration kept going out off sync and been slightly off they could be two reasons behind this is the battery’s were slightly low on the wiimote or when I left the room the signal went and that knocked it out off sync. I must now test this theory out and then edit the photograph(s) off myself to use the in my self-portrait project.

Sixth Sense Technology

After talking to one of my housemates about my self-portrait idea and discussing what I wanted to do he showed me something amazing online about a guy called Pranav Mistry, who in November last year introduced something called sixth sense technology at a TED seminar on what he had come up with and why he wanted to do it and how he could see the future and built a device and software that could recognise key hand jesters and allow the user to use there hands to take a photograph and use the palm of there hand as a phone key pad this is all amazing stuff which i am very interested in and he is making the software open sourced and is soon to be releasing the blue prints to make the hardware which he says cost’s around $350. This is all very cool and a great new way to interact with the world and it is this what i would like to show in my own self portrait that they a many ways to interact with people and it is this that i would like to show people out myself and by making the audience in which case you decide the way i should look and the colours of the photographs i believe it kind of shows that? Anyway I can’t wait to see how sixth sense technology progress’s in the next few years in the mean time check it out yourself.

Self-Portrait Idea (Hardware and Software)

For my self-portrait idea the hardware needed for my idea is quite simple all I need is to make the touch screen work on any hard surface is a projector, a wii remote, a computer and two LED pens which are dead easy to make. I found all this out after doing some research into Johnny Chung Lee, Liam on of our lectures suggested I look at after I spoke to him about my idea.
I found all this extremely helpful and very interesting the only problem now is the software to create allow the image of myself to be manipulated by the user. In my research so far I have found a few piece’s of open source software Boon Jin and Smooth Board which is a enhancement on Johnny Lee’s own software he created, I also have a suspicion I can use Processing or Max MSP two pieces of software we are learning to use on my course at AUCB, but I need to do more research in this so keep checking back and I will let you know what I find out in the mean time check out this Johnny Lee’s videos on You Tube.
